Andy is a true software engineer with experience in computer graphics, computer networks, artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics. He comes to Ruby from a background in C#/.NET, and is enjoying embracing Agile development in a fast-paced environment.
Andy has facilitated an introduction to Ruby and Rails course at the Peer 2 Peer University. He regularly shares and contributes code back to the Ruby and Rails community. Before coming to Highgroove, he developed a geographic information system API for the United States Army.
He also worked at NASA for a brief stint building software tools for mechanical engineers (unfortunately they didn't let him go into space, though). He has written papers published by IEEE, on "Exploratory Visual Analysis of Conserved Domains on Multiple Sequence Alignments", and "Effective Display of Conserved Domains on a Multiple Sequence Alignment". He has a BS in CS from Mississippi State (where he graduated with an impressive 4.0).
Andy enjoys Ultimate Frisbee, frequently "laying out" to the detriment of his body, loves National Public Radio, and has been a winner on "Wait Wait, Don’t Tell Me," so yes, that is Carl Kasell on his answering machine.
